Queensland manufacturing delivering more full-time jobs

Queensland manufacturing is leading the way when it comes to providing full-time work to Queenslanders.

Minister for Manufacturing Cameron Dick said about 86 per cent of all manufacturing jobs in Queensland were full-time, giving workers greater job security, especially in the regions.

“Manufacturing ranks in the top three Queensland sectors when it comes to generating full-time work,” Mr Dick said.

“More than eight per cent of Queensland full-time jobs are manufacturing jobs, which is only exceeded by health (12.3 per cent) and construction (12.0 per cent).

“Manufacturing and the supply chain manufacturers support are crucial to our state.

“This is especially true in our regions where large percentages of manufacturing jobs are full-time, including in Mackay-Whitsunday (95.5 per cent), Darling Downs (93.3 per cent), and North Queensland (88.6 per cent).

“October is Queensland Manufacturing Month, and these figures show there’s plenty to celebrate when it comes to manufacturing in our state,” he said.

“The Palaszczuk Government is committed to keep growing the industry through initiatives like our $46 million Made in Queensland program and the Advanced Manufacturing 10-Year Roadmap and Action Plan.”

Figures at the end of the September quarter 2019 show manufacturing directly employs around 170,000 Queenslanders, which is about 6.6 per cent of the state’s workforce.

Queensland company Wagners CFT Manufacturing at Wellcamp on the Darling Downs is a regional company employing 119workers, the majority working full-time.

Wagners CFT Manufacturing CEO Cameron Coleman said the company is a world-leader in designing and manufacturing infrastructure that’s made from advanced composite materials, including bridges, wharves and boardwalks.

“We’re a proudly regional-based manufacturer, and the skills and capabilities of our employeesare a major part of our success,” Mr Coleman said.

“There are great advantages for us in having a long-term experienced workforce who can keep developing their knowledge and understanding of our cutting-edge materials to deliver exciting new projects.”
