Question of Week: Do I need Council approval for septic tank?

Kempsey Shire Council

Septic system set in grass in a garden

If you own a property with an on-site sewage management system such as a septic tank, you must make sure your system is approved by Council and working properly.

Council approval is required both to install and to operate an on-site sewage management system. This is because these systems can pose health risks for your family and the community if not properly maintained.

Once your system has been installed, we’ll regularly inspect it to ensure it passes safety and maintenance checks. Council will send you a renewal letter explaining the requirements when your inspection is due.
