In 2025, RACSTA prioritised parental leave and sought assistance from ASMOF NSW to help ensure that surgical Trainees rotating into New South Wales could retain entitlements to paid parental leave from their previous rotations. Previously, Trainees needed to work 40 continuous weeks in an NSW hospital to be eligible for paid parental leave.
We are now pleased to announce that, effective from March 2026, the NSW Ministry of Health will recognise all prior service undertaken in Commonwealth health entities, as part of an accredited training program or College-supported role, for the purpose of determining paid parental leave eligibility.
This is a significant win for surgical trainees and their families that was made possible through sustained advocacy from RACSTA and close collaboration with ASMOF NSW.
