Rainbow flag shows support for LGBTQI

A rainbow has been be hoisted above Council’s Spence Street offices this morning in recognition of International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia.

IDAHBOBIT Day aims to coordinate international efforts that raise awareness of LGBTQI rights violations and stimulate interest in LGBTQI rights work worldwide.

Mayor Bob Manning said flying the flag was one small thing Council could do to support the important work of the Queensland AIDS Council, which asked Council to participate in the global initiative.

“The Cairns community is extremely diverse and we take pride in the respect shown to people of all walks of life, no matter where they come from, the language they speak or their sexuality.

“By flying the rainbow flag today we want show our support for the LGBTQI community while reminding residents that it’s up to each of us to be vigilant, in what we say and how we act, to ensure all in our community feel safe and respected.”
