Rapid Antigen Tests

A rapid antigen test (RAT) is a quick way to test if you are positive for COVID-19. A RAT can sometimes detect COVID-19 before you develop symptoms.

RATs are quick – returning a result within 10 to 30 minutes. You can do the test yourself at home in your own time.

These tests involve taking either a saliva sample or nasal swab that is placed into a chemical solution.

There are a few different types of RAT kits available – instructions differ between brands and kits so ensure you read the instructions carefully.

They are available online, from pharmacies, supermarkets and other retail stores. Remember all tests are single use.

Did you know that for the next 3 months, until the end of April, if you have an eligible Commonwealth concession card, you can access up to 10 free RAT’s from participating pharmacies? You can find out more information about the RAT Concessional Access Program on the Department of Health website.

Remember! If you test positive, you should immediately isolate and report your positive test result to your state or territory government. Watch and share an animation with information about what you should do if you test positive on the Department of Health website. This includes staying home, ordering groceries and medicine online if you can, and not having visitors to your home.
