Reckless driver’s car seized in Alice Springs

A 39-year-old man who drove at excessive speeds through road works narrowly missing workers in Alice Springs at the weekend has been issued a Notice to Appear before court.

On Saturday 17 April police observed a white Mitsubishi Triton speeding along Sadadeen Road.

Police indicated for the driver to stop, which he did momentarily before driving off at speed. The driver did this several more times before proceeded to drive at excessive speeds through night time road works, narrowly missing a number of workers. He then drove into Little Sisters Camp where he did a number of burn outs close to homes.

Utilising tyre deflation devices Police stopped the vehicle on the Stuart Highway and the driver was arrested.

The man was taken back to the Alice Springs Watch House where he charged with one count each of Fail to obey signal of member, Drive High Range Blood Alcohol Content (0.193) and Driving a vehicle in a dangerous manner.

His vehicle was seized under the Anti-Hooning Legislation and impounded for a period of 48 hours.

“Speed zones around roadwork areas are reduced to offer the workers a level of protection. Thankfully the road workers and other road users were not harmed as a result of this man’s reckless driving behaviour,” said Acting Superintendent Peter Dash

“We hope the 48 hour impounding of his vehicle will give him time to reconsider his actions. We ask that all motorists continue to obey speed limits and are considerate of all other road users including cyclists and pedestrians.”

He will appear before Alice Springs Local Court at a later date.
