Reclaiming Night in Crown Street Mall – Wollongong

Wollongong’s Crown Street Mall will host a Reclaim the Night Illawarra event today, Thursday 31 October, and everyone’s welcome to attend.

Reclaim the Night Illawarra is focused on stopping violence against women and promoting the safety and equity of women.

The event is being coordinated by the Illawarra Committee Against Domestic Violence, of which Council is a member, and the Reclaim The Night Illawarra Committee.

The night will feature a gathering in the Arts Precinct, outside the Illawarra Performing Arts Centre, from 5.30pm, a march into the Crown Street Mall from 6pm, a gathering featuring guest speakers, a candlelight vigil and entertainment until 8.30pm.

“As a city we don’t condone violence against anyone,” Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said.

“This event is about coming together as a community and saying we don’t tolerate violence against women, and that for women who don’t feel safe, there is support for them. It’s an important message and one that Council is proud to support.”

The event will feature speeches from the Hon Linda Burney MP and local entertainers.
