The Department of Education and Training is proud to announce the finalists for the 2026 World Teachers’ Day – NT Excellence Awards, marking 21 years of recognising the people who make an outstanding contribution to education in the Northern Territory.
The annual awards acknowledge the exceptional work of principals, teachers, leaders and support staff who make a lasting difference in the lives of students and school communities.
A record 604 nominations were received across the nine award categories, highlighting the impact and dedication of education professionals working in schools and corporate services throughout the NT.
Acting Chief Executive of the Department of Education and Training, Aderyn Chatterton, said the unprecedented number of nominations reflected the deep respect communities have for the education workforce.
“Receiving a record 604 nominations is a testament to the incredible respect and appreciation our educators, leaders and support staff inspire in their schools, families and communities.
“For 21 years, these awards have shone a spotlight on the people who help Territory students learn, grow and thrive, and it is wonderful to recognise another outstanding group of finalists.”
Ms Chatterton said the finalists embody the passion and commitment that underpin student success.
“Our finalists represent the very best of Territory education. They go above and beyond every day to create opportunities for students to learn, grow and succeed.”
Regional award ceremonies will be held on Friday 30 October 2026 to coincide with World Teachers’ Day, providing an opportunity for school communities across the Territory to celebrate excellence in education.
Each of the nine award categories will recognise six regional winners, with one overall Territory winner selected for each category:
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Educator of the YearEarly Childhood Educator of the YearCorporate Based Support Person of the YearInclusion Educator of the YearLeader in Education of the YearPrimary Educator of the YearPrincipal of the YearSecondary Educator of the YearSchool Based Support Person of the Year
Ms Chatterton said the awards recognise the many people who contribute to positive outcomes for students, both inside and outside the classroom.
“From early childhood settings and classrooms to leadership roles and support positions, each finalist is helping shape brighter futures for Territory children and young people.
“World Teachers’ Day is a chance for all Territorians to celebrate the people who make a difference in education every day. Congratulations to every finalist on this well-deserved recognition and thank you for the positive impact you have on students, schools and communities across the Territory.”
