Records broken as Hobart continues to embrace winter festivities

Nic Street, Minister for Hospitality and Events

Attendance records are expected to be broken as early data rolls in from this year’s Dark Mofo Festival and we prepare for the next stellar winter event in the State’s line up.

Minister for Hospitality and Events, Nic Street, said with the tenth year of Dark Mofo drawing to a close, attention now turns to the next iconic winter event – the Festival of Voices.

The annual festival attracts more than 25,000 people across two weeks of vocal performances, showcases and interactive events.

The Rockliff Liberal Government had committed $2.25 million through Events Tasmania’s Major Event Partnership Program to support the delivery of the festival over the next three years.

Kicking off with the ever-popular Big Sing event next Friday, the festival will feature more than 170 events across the State.

Minister for the Arts, Elise Archer, said highlights include performances by Mark Seymour, Mahalia Barnes and the Wine Country at Josef Chromy and Spring Vale Vineyards – A Dolly Parton Singalong.

“The festival will once again present a diverse program, with engaging and entertaining performances, educational workshops for singers, and opportunities to participate and experience the sheer joy of singing,” Minister Archer said.

Meanwhile, preliminary data collected by DarkLab suggests overall attendance figures for this year for Dark Mofo are well above anything recorded previously.

Event organisers have reported a preliminary overall attendance total of about 427,000 visitations across all ticketed and non-ticketed events.

Impressively, this includes approximately 110,000 total attendances at the Winter Feast and 90,000 at Dark Park.

“These figures show the value to our State from supporting events such as Dark Mofo and it’s the bottom-line of how we developed the new Tasmanian Events Strategy 2023-2027,” Minister Street said.

“Mass participation events like Dark Mofo and Festival of Voices are significant contributors to our State’s visitor economy.”

Minister Street also congratulated Dark Mofo’s outgoing Creative Director, Leigh Carmichael, on his hugely successful final program.
