The Australian Government is seeking a new chair of the National Capital Authority, with the current chair’s term concluding in January 2027.
The NCA plays a critical role in shaping, protecting and enhancing Canberra as a place of national significance. The authority is responsible for ensuring the capital reflects Australia’s identity, democratic values and cultural heritage, while planning for its continued growth and development for future generations.
The chair provides strategic leadership to the authority and its board, guiding deliberations, supporting sound governance and helping ensure the NCA delivers on its statutory responsibilities. The role presents a unique opportunity to contribute to the future direction of the national capital and uphold Canberra’s status as a symbol of Australia’s nationhood.
Applications opened today and will close at 11.30pm AEST on 16 September 2026.
The government is seeking applications from accomplished leaders with demonstrated governance experience and the capacity to operate effectively at a board level. Candidates should possess sound judgement, strategic thinking and an ability to engage constructively with government, industry, community and other stakeholders.
Applications are encouraged from individuals with expertise relevant to the NCA’s functions, including urban planning, architecture, heritage, public administration, infrastructure, finance, environmental management or community engagement. An appreciation of Canberra’s unique role as the national capital and an understanding of the intersection between planning, design, governance and public interest outcomes will be highly regarded.
