Recycling Reality Check: Red Bin Filling Up Too Fast?

Is your red bin filling up before collection day? Food scraps might be taking up more space than you think.

Food scraps make up more than a third of what’s found in Eurobodalla’s red bins. Food scraps don’t belong in your green or yellow bins but can find be composted at home instead of going to landfill.

A compost bin, worm farm or a few hungry chooks will happily take care of fruit and vegetable scraps and turn them into something useful. Chook poo and compost creates a nutrient-rich fertiliser for your garden, helps you grow healthier plants and can even save you money on store-bought compost.

Every food scrap kept out of landfill also makes a difference for the environment. When food waste breaks down in landfill, it produces methane – a powerful greenhouse gas. Composting lets nature do the job in a much better way.

Not sure where to start? Eurobodalla Council is running free composting and worm farming workshops this September, making it easy to learn the basics and get started at home.
