Red Cross is supporting Gulf of Carpentaria coast residents in the path of Tropical Cyclone Trevor ahead of it making landfall tomorrow.
Red Cross has been activated to manage and provide support in evacuation centres set up in Darwin and Katherine, to temporarily house the thousands arriving from Groote Eylandt, Numbulwar and Borroloola, in what’s being compared to the biggest evacuation since Cyclone Tracy.
Communities in in the cyclone-watch area are being advised to self–evacuate as soon as possible. Residents of Groote Eylandt are being evacuated by air to Darwin, with residents of the coastal community of Numbulwar being transported by buses to Katherine.
Red Cross emergency services spokesperson Paul Mitchell said Red Cross has an excellent free resource available to help people prepare for an emergency.
“Being prepared can save lives,” said Mr Mitchell.
“People who have prepared for a disaster often have more resilience and that can help them recover faster, both financially and emotionally. Information on cyclone alerts can be found at the Bureau of Meteorology website.
