Six community sporting groups across regional Western Australia are to share in more than $18,000 in the latest round of the State Government’s Active Regional Communities grants.
The Active Regional Communities program aims to increase the opportunities for regional people to participate in sporting and active recreational activities in WA.
The grants include:
- Mid-West: $5,000 to Athletics West to provide free opportunities for people in Meekatharra to access community athletics programs;
- Pilbara: $2,000 to the Karratha Kats netball club to assist 10 girls to travel to Broome to compete in the North West NAIDOC Carnival;
- South-West: $3,500 to Manjimup Speedway Club to conduct the Super Mod WA State Title;
- South-West: $1,500 to WA Veterans Cricket to host a combined tournament for over 50s, 60s and 70s in the Bunbury region;
- South-West: $1,400 to Coastal Rowing WA to provide coach training and accreditation to local coaches in the maritime aspects of coastal rowing; and
- Great Southern: $5,000 to Lower Great Southern Tennis to support a coaching program and coach development and ongoing engagement and support of tennis clubs.
The Active Regional Communities program is administered by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries.
As stated by Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray:
“I’m pleased the Active Regional Communities program has been able to provide assistance to regional sporting clubs – and in such a variety of different sports.
“Thanks to the program, regional athletes will be more competitive, coaches will be better trained and qualified, and events can go ahead that otherwise may not have.
“The program is a winner for our regional sporting people.”
