Registrations for the City of Launceston’s annual Hard Waste Collection Day open online from today.
For just $10, residents in the Launceston municipality can register their bulky unwanted items for collection in March, including fridges, furniture, and other large items.
Annually, more than 40 tonnes of unwanted items are collected through the scheme, with more than 60 per cent of items being recycled, re-used, or re-sold through the Uptipity re-sale shop.
Launceston Mayor Albert van Zetten said the Hard Waste Collection Day was particularly popular among elderly residents, or those without regular access to a vehicle.
“The City of Launceston’s Hard Waste Collection Day is a perfect opportunity to get rid of larger unwanted items that may be cluttering up the shed,” Mayor van Zetten said.
“By registering with the program, you can save yourself some time, energy and fuel, to get those items disposed of responsibly.”
City of Launceston Sustainability Team Leader Michael Attard said the program had seen plenty of re-usable items registered in recent years.
“One of the benefits of this specific program is that we have a focus on re-use, re-sale and recycling before we even think about sending items to landfill,” Mr Attard said.
“I think people appreciate that their items won’t simply be trashed; they will be assessed to see if they can be repurposed.
“We hope Launceston residents will register those unwanted items they may have around the house, so they can be collected and assessed for re-use, recycling or re-sale.”
