Reid Highway duplication to include new Dayton-Caversham bridge

  • Reid Highway dual carriageway project includes new bridge
  • Connecting the growing parts of Caversham and Dayton
  • Improved access to local amenities and more efficient bus routes
  • Contract award expected mid-February
  • Early works activities begin immediately to prepare site for construction
  • Construction of a new bridge connecting the growing suburbs of Caversham and Dayton will begin in mid-2019, following a joint funding arrangement between the State Government and City of Swan.

The bridge will provide alternative access for buses crossing Reid Highway and pedestrians accessing a proposed new primary school at South Caversham. It will also provide an additional entry and exit point for emergency vehicles.

To ensure construction efficiencies and minimise impacts to the community and road users, the bridge has been included within the scope of the Reid Highway dual carriageway project, with a contract for design and construction of the works set for award in the coming weeks.

Some early works activities will begin on the southern side of Reid Highway this month, to prepare for construction to begin in mid-2019. This includes clearing of non-native vegetation and stockpiling of fill material to be used as part of the bridge construction program.

As stated by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:

“The Arthur Street Bridge will improve local connectivity, reduce congestion and provide better access to shops and local services on both sides of Reid Highway.

“The areas of Caversham and Dayton have struggled with access, and this bridge will create opportunities for quicker bus routes and travel time savings as the population grows.

“We thank the City of Swan for their commitment to this important local road improvement, and look forward to working with them as the project moves forward.”

As stated by City of Swan Mayor David Lucas:

“The City of Swan is pleased to be working with the State Government to deliver this very important infrastructure project for the benefit of our residents in Dayton, Caversham and surrounds.

“The construction of this bridge will connect and improve the quality of life of our communities in Caversham and Dayton.

“We expect traffic congestion to alleviate near the intersection of Reid Highway and Lord Street as the bridge provides a new alternative route.

“The bridge will also assist local families, with better access to nearby schools on either side of Reid Highway as well as the Dayton District Open space.”
