Removal of school gates and fences on Old Heidelberg Road

Yarra City Council has unanimously resolved to restore public pedestrian access to a section of Darebin Creek.

Access from the eastern section of Old Heidelberg Road had been blocked by a gate and fencing installed by Alphington Grammar School.

The Council decision followed extensive community engagement last year, where locals overwhelmingly supported the removal of the gate so pedestrians could once again access the area.

Under the Local Government Act 1989 (LGA89), Council has powers to manage roads and traffic, and to remove any obstructions that prevent the free use of a road.

A letter was sent to Alphington Grammar School late last week advising them of this process.

Alphington Grammar School has until Monday, 16 May 2022 to remove the gates and fence and reinstate public access.
