Griffith City Council is inviting local women, girls and gender-diverse people to help shape safer, more welcoming and inclusive public spaces through Her Way 2680: Inclusive Places.
Delivered through the Safer Cities: Her Way 2 Program, the project will develop a gender-inclusive placemaking strategy for Griffith’s CBD and key walking, cycling and public transport connections.
Council is seeking participants from a range of ages, cultural backgrounds and lived experiences to take part in daytime and evening walkshops and co-design sessions.
During the walkshops, participants will identify places where they feel safe or unsafe and discuss issues such as lighting, visibility, footpaths, crossings, seating, wayfinding and access to public transport.
The co-design sessions will provide participants with a genuine opportunity to develop and prioritise their own ideas for improving public spaces. These ideas will help shape the Inclusive Places strategy, temporary pop-up trials and recommendations for Council’s future CBD Strategy.
Griffith Mayor, Councillor Doug Curran said the project would place local lived experience at the centre of planning and design.
“Women, girls and gender-diverse people are the experts in how they experience and move through our public spaces, and the statistics show they are the most likely not to use a space if it feels unsafe” Mayor Curran said.
“We want to create places where everyone feels confident to walk, cycle, meet friends, spend time with family and participate in community life. This is about providing more opportunities for all people to enjoy Griffiths public spaces.”
No planning or design experience is required. Participants under 16 will require permission from a parent or legal guardian and must be accompanied by their nominated parent or guardian.
Participants will be asked to attend one daytime or evening walk shop and one co-design session. Dates, locations and participant reimbursement details will be confirmed before registrations open.
Council will provide an inclusive and accessible engagement process, with alternative ways to participate available for people who cannot attend the scheduled sessions.
