The Australian Government is spending $10 million to repair damaged river corridors. This work will cover more than 20 kilometres in the Derwent River catchment. This will help create cleaner, healthier waterways in Tasmania.
The project will:
- plan long-term restoration to the natural environment
- remove weeds, such as invasive willow trees
- rebuild habitats for threatened animals and plants
- improve water quality and aquatic ecosystems
- create local jobs through a Ranger Program.
The work is being led by the Derwent Catchment Project. It will also support farmers by improving sustainable farming practices and strengthening biosecurity across the catchment.
This funding is part of the Local Environmental Projects Program. It supports practical work to protect and restore Australia’s environment and heritage.
