Retirement announcement of Deputy Commissioner Murray Smalpage APM

This afternoon, Deputy Commissioner for People, Crime and Capability Mr Murray Smalpage APM has announced his retirement from the Northern Territory Police Force.

Mr Smalpage was appointed to the position of Deputy Police Commissioner within the Northern Territory Police Force in 2020 from his position as Assistant Commissioner for the Western Australian Police Force. Mr Smalpage’s policing career spans over four decades including 40 years serving in Western Australia in a number of senior roles, including Professional Standards and Regional Western Australia, where he was responsible for the delivery of policing services across the 2.5 million square kilometres of Western Australia.

“The similarities in policing practices between the Northern Territory and Western Australia reflect law enforcement’s unique challenges in remote and regional areas of Australia.”, said Mr Smalpage. “

“It has been an honour and a privilege to serve and protect alongside colleagues and members of the Northern Territory Police, Fire and Emergency Services. I am grateful for the many unique experiences and opportunities that this career has provided me.

As a police officer, I have seen many changes and challenges within our society, and I am proud to have been a part of the efforts to keep our communities safe and secure.

Policing in the Northern Territory during the COVID-19 pandemic was a difficult task. When I reflect on my time as Deputy Commissioner, I couldn’t be more proud of the men and women who at short notice and at personal sacrifice, worked at some of the most remote locations in Australia to keep the community safe during that time.”

Deputy Commissioner Smalpage’s last day with NTPF will be 15 September, which marks 44 years since he joined as a Western Australian Police Cadet in 1979.

Commissioner and CEO Michael Murphy APM thanked Deputy Commissioner Smalpage for his long and distinguished service and wished him all the best for his retirement.

Media note: Mr Smalpage will be available for media interviews next week, if requested.
