Revitalising Our CBD – Austin Lane Transforms

Work to revitalise Darwin City is progressing well with two new covered walkways being installed in Austin Lane.

This job-creating project will help transform Darwin’s CBD into a more pedestrian-friendly space and improve connectivity for visitors and locals between Cavenagh Street, Austin Lane and the Smith Street Mall.

PTM group is delivering the works which will support more than 40 local jobs.

Consultation with property owners and businesses in the area is about to start on the design and construction of infrastructure and services to support community activities and events in Austin Lane and Spain Place, such as street parties and festivals.

This will look at creating more inviting and engaging experiences for visitors and locals moving through Darwin city lanes to other destinations in the city, capturing the cooling benefits of breezes between buildings and supporting local businesses.

This project is part of the historic $200 million Cities Deal and the Territory Labor Government’s broader vision for a cooler, revitalised CBD, which includes work on the Civic and State Square Masterplan Redevelopment.

The Chan Building Demolition tender recently closed and is being assessed prior to awarding the works. Once work has started, this will unlock further cool, green parklands for the whole community to enjoy and attract more people to visit, stay and invest.

Work on the walkways in Austin Lane are expected to be completed in the coming weeks.
