Rhodes Moon Festival

The Rhodes community is painting the town red with love and support this Moon Festival.

The City of Canada Bay is supporting a community initiative to gift and display over two thousand red lanterns throughout Rhodes as part of the annual Rhodes Moon Festival, to symbolise hope and a brighter future for all.

“I would like to thank the Rhodes Multicultural Community Association (RMCA) and all our local volunteers for organising this wonderful celebration for our community,” said City of Canada Bay Mayor Angelo Tsirekas.

“I am delighted Council is getting behind this initiative to bring life to the Rhodes business precinct and I am looking forward to seeing Rhodes especially decorated for the occasion.”

As part of the Rhodes Moon Festival, sponsored by the City of Canada Bay, the RMCA will hang beautiful red lantern displays at Rhodes Foreshore Park, The Connection, Union Square, and Rhodes Station. Some lucky residents will find the red lanterns in their home letterboxes.

“We are asking any residents who receive one of their lanterns to make a wish and hang the lantern on their balcony as a symbol of hope,” said RMCA member Jing Hong.

Volunteers dressed as the God of Fortune and Moon Fairy Lady will distribute the lanterns to extend a message of love and hope to local shopkeepers throughout, as part of the City of Canada Bay’s #LoveLocal campaign.

“We have also sent red lanterns and moon cakes to frontline workers at the COVID Ward at Concord Hospital, Burwood Police, and Rhodes Fire Brigade to show our deep appreciation,” she added.

“During this year’s Moon Festival, we are showing that we support one another as a community and that together we can get through this pandemic.”

Local businesses, including Lilly’s Espresso & Cucina, Oliveto Ristorante & Bar, and Schibello Coffee are offering free coffees to frontline workers at various times throughout 18-21 September. Tasty Towns Gelato will offer free gelato to frontline workers from 18-21 September. For further details visit the RMCA Facebook Page.
