- Regional events support the Cook Labor Government’s economic diversification agenda, and boost the tourism sector, local jobs and businesses
Riders from around the world are hitting the iconic trails of the Margaret River region today as Australia’s largest four-day mountain bike race, the Cape to Cape MTB, gets underway.
The endurance event is recognised as one of the longest-running and most popular mountain bike stage races in the Asia-Pacific region, with competitors riding 200km across diverse and challenging terrain, including coastal trails, national parks, forests, farmlands, mountain bike parks and bushland.
The annual event acts as a key driver of visitation to the region, providing a boost to local tourism and hospitality businesses and serving as a gateway for out-of-region visitors to discover the South West’s rich landscape.
Catering to all levels of experience and ability, the popularity of the Cape to Cape MTB has continued to grow, from 100 riders in its inaugural year in 2008 to more than 800riders annually.
The 2025 event saw more than 1,700 visitors generate close to $2.2 million in visitor spend into the local economy and was supported through the Cook Labor Government’s Regional Events Program.
Highlights from the event, showcasing Western Australia’s picturesque South West region, will be broadcast to audiences in more than 100 countries following the event, and will be available through on-demand services for 12 months thereafter.
Events are a key contributor to the Cook Labor Government’s economic diversification strategy to support local jobs and drive regional dispersal, injecting millions of valuable tourism dollars into local communities.
