River Street Duplication – Stage 2 set to start: Ballina Shire

On Monday 23 January Ballina Shire Council will commence works on Stage 2 of the River Street Duplication project from Henry Philp Avenue to Tweed Street, Ballina. Stage 2 is expected to continue to July 2023.

This follows the completion of Stage 1 works from Burns Point Ferry Road to Barlows Road.

“Council is delivering the River Street Duplication project across four stages. Once all stages are complete, this project will provide a four-lane road from West Ballina into Ballina Island, doubling the road’s capacity to comfortably cater for traffic into the future,” said Mr Brett Dyki, Ballina Shire Council’s Manager – Project Management Office.

“This stage of works will include duplicating both the west and eastbound lanes, installing a new set of traffic lights, renewed pedestrian footpaths and upgrades to stormwater services,” added Mr Dyki.

Stage 2 works include:

  • Westbound and eastbound lane duplication
  • Installation of traffic lights at the intersection of River Street and Brunswick Street
  • Installation of protected right-hand turns into Brunswick Street
  • Upgrade of stormwater services
  • Renewed pedestrian footpaths

During these works the following traffic conditions will be in place:

  • Two-way traffic will be maintained in contra-flow.
  • Access from Brunswick Street south will be closed at the River Street intersection for the duration of the works. Residents will need to detour via Henry Philp Ave, Tweed or Kerr St.
  • No right-hand turn from River St into Brunswick Street. Please use Kerr and Tamar St.
  • The southern footpath on River Street will be closed from Henry Philp Ave to Tweed St. Pedestrians will be detoured to the northern side of River St at the Kerr St lights, and under Fishery Creek Bridge to reconnect with the footpath.
  • Access to River Street properties will be maintained with traffic control (during construction hours).
  • A temporary site compound will be established on River St at the front of Betta Hire and adjacent to the bridge. Access to Betta Hire remains unchanged.
  • The westbound River St bus stop will be temporarily located 300m east near Tweed St.
  • Speed limit reduced to 40kmph through construction zones
