Rivervale Burglary Arrest

Cannington Detectives have charged a man in relation to a burglary incident in Rivervale this morning, Sunday 1 September 2019, during which a police officer was struck with an axe during the arrest of the man.

About 12:35am Police received an emergency call regarding a burglary in progress at a residence in Wicca Street. A resident was alerted to the situation by their dog, and upon inspection of their house noticed a smashed window. The dog was still barking and the resident was concerned the offender was still present.

Several police units from Cannington Police, Belmont Police, Kensington Police and the Regional Investigations Unit were deployed to the scene under emergency conditions and a man was seen fleeing the area, climbing over fences and houses.

Officers pursued the man on foot, and as one officer caught up to the man and attempted to arrest him it will be alleged the man swung an axe at the officer, hitting him on the hand. The man was tackled to the ground as he attempted to swing the axe a second time, and was arrested without further incident.

It will be further alleged several items of interest from the burglary were located in the man’s possession.

The police officer and arrested man were both taken to hospital for treatment to injuries they received during the arrest. Neither were seriously injured.

A 45-year-old man from Narrogin has been charged with:

– Aggravated home burglary and commit

– Stealing

– With intent to do Grievous Bodily Harm Unlawfully Wounds Another

He was refused bail and is due to appear in the Perth Magistrates Court today, Sunday 1 September 2019.
