Road closures for Cairns Ironman

Residents are advised that there will be changed traffic conditions and road closures for the Cairns Ironman on Sunday 12 June.

Road closures on Sunday 12 June include:

  • The Captain Cook Highway will be closed from Veivers Rd, Palm Cove, to Beor St, Craiglie (near Port Douglas), from 5.30am to 5.30pm.
  • The Cairns Esplanade, from Aplin St to Upward St, will be closed from 7am on Sunday until 1.30am on Monday.
  • Parts of Williams Esplanade and Cedar Rd, Palm Cove, will be closed 4am to noon.

Under changed traffic conditions, access to the Cairns Airport, Cairns Beaches, Smithfield, and the Northern Beaches will remain at all times, however allow extra travel time for your journey as delays are expected.

This year, there has been a change to the bike course in the Smithfield/Trinity Park areas, with riders now turning onto Reed Rd, before turning onto Smithfield Village Dr, continuing onto McGregor Rd, and then onto Yorkeys Knob Road. Changed traffic conditions will be in place in these areas from 4am to 7.30pm.

Sidlaw St, Smithfield, will no longer be closed or impacted on race day.

The Smithfield Waste Transfer Station will also be closed on Sunday 12 June.

In addition, the Cairns Esplanade, from Spence St to Aplin St, will be closed from 5am on Friday 10 June to 1.30am on Monday 13 June.

The Cairns Esplanade, from Aplin St to Upward St, will also be closed from 6.30am to 10am on Saturday 11 June.

The southern Esplanade (Lagoon) carpark will be fully closed from 12.30am on Thursday 9 June until 6pm on Monday 13 June.

Please note, some carpark restrictions will remain in place until Friday 17 June. During this time, the EV charging station will be unavailable. Please see for alternate charging locations.
