Motorists are warned to take extra care on the roads in the coming days with record rainfall expected to hit large parts of the state.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole said drivers were being encouraged to delay unnecessary travel in impacted areas, with severe weather forecast for Northern and Central Tablelands, North West Slopes and Plains, Riverina and parts of the Mid North Coast likely to cause major disruptions to the road network.
“The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting some parts of the state will receive a month’s worth of rain in the next three days, which could lead to flash flooding and landslips in these areas,” Mr Toole said.
“We only need to look back to the March floods to see how seriously our roads can be impacted during severe weather events.
“If you are in an area affected by the wild weather, avoid unnecessary travel and never drive through floodwaters.
“If you must travel, plan ahead, take the time to know the risk in your area, be on high alert for flooding, pot holes and other hazards, slow down and drive to the conditions.”
Mr Toole said Transport for NSW would have crews working to keep the road network open and safe where possible.
“We’re mobilising crews to be on standby and ready to respond in areas of most concern to help divert traffic, place signs, inspect assets and carry out a range of other activities to keep people safe and mimimise inconvenience,” Mr Toole said.
“If you can’t delay your travel, please keep an eye out for these crews because reckless driving will put both you and our staff at risk.”
Minister for Police and Emergency Services David Elliott said NSW State Emergency Service (SES) units across the state are gearing up for forecast flooding.
“SES Volunteers and supporting agencies have already responded to over 190 calls for assistance yesterday and are ready to assist as more widespread rain moves across NSW,” he said.
“Earlier this year we saw the devastating impacts that floods have on our roads and on our communities. Over the coming days I urge everyone to heed the warnings, be prepared and never enter floodwaters.”
