Rob Roy Track closed due to erosion

The Department of Conservation (DOC) has closed Rob Roy Track today (22 July 2019) due to a slip that has undercut the track making it unsafe. The track may remain closed for several months while an alternative route is identified and constructed. Rob Roy valley is prone to erosion, making it challenging to find and construct an alternative route that will not be affected by further slips. The new track will also need to be established by hand as the area is not accessible with a digger. Work will begin this week.

Walkers can access an alternative viewpoint of Rob Roy Glacier approximately 30-45 minutes’ walk along West Matukituki Track from Raspberry Creek carpark.

Rob Roy Track is a popular day walk in Mount Aspiring National Park. It receives around 20,000 visitors a year.
