Robbery with violence – Southport

Police have charged a 56-year-old man after an elderly man was allegedly robbed of his four-wheel-drive at Southport overnight.

Around 6pm an 80-year-old man was parked in the driveway of a club at Scarborough Street with the vehicle running when he got out to try and assist his elderly wife into the passenger side.

It is alleged an unknown man approached the vehicle and a scuffle occurred with the elderly man. The offender got into the vehicle and attempted to accelerate away with the elderly man trying to stop him at which time the elderly man was dragged a number of metres by the vehicle before falling to the roadway.

The vehicle was driven away and 45 minutes later was involved in a minor rear end traffic incident in North Street. The vehicle continued on before being parked in Fig Tree Lane where police on patrol located the vehicle and the man.

The elderly man was taken to hospital for treatment to his injuries which are not life threatening.

A 56-year-old man has been charged with robbery with violence, possess relevant substance, possess utensil and disqualified driving.

He is due to face the Southport Magistrates Court today.
