Rockhampton Regional Council has been named a finalist in the 2021 Grey Nomad Awards.

The awards program shines a light on regional Australia, while providing mature-aged and long-journey travellers with verified information that helps with their holiday decision making.

Advance Rockhampton nominated the Explore Rockhampton Self-Guided Audio Tours App in the 2021 Best Grey Nomad Trail category and was listed as a finalist after proving to tourism leaders that it provided an exceptional experience for visitors aged over 50.

Rockhampton Region Mayor Tony Williams said being named as a finalist in the awards reinforces the Rockhampton region as one of Australia’s top holiday destinations for the drive market.

“Rockhampton is a popular holiday destination amongst nomads, especially towards the middle of the year when the region sees an influx of caravans escaping the winter months down south,” Mayor Williams said.

“Launched in 2021, the free Explore Rockhampton App currently hosts seven tours that allows visitors the opportunity to tour the region at their own pace.

“The app promotes more immersive ways of exploring the Rockhampton region, on foot, while learning about our frontier town to bustling river port to gold rush city”.

Advance Rockhampton Executive Manager Greg Bowden said the award recognition will help to push Rockhampton’s tourism profile as interstate travel opens in the lead up to the 2022 nomad’s season.

“This award recognition is timely as the Advance Rockhampton team look to launch their 2022 nomads campaign, putting Rocky on the radar as a winter holiday destination for nomads residing in Australia’s southern states,” Mr Bowden said.

“Being named a 2021 Grey Nomads award finalist builds on the great work the team are doing in driving visitation, and we hope to see the recognition extend to an increase in visitor numbers and spend throughout our region over the coming months.”

Grey Nomads Awards Director Kim Morgan said the Awards program shines a light on regional Australia by rewarding organisations and destinations that cater in an exemplary way to mature age visitors.

“The Awards are fostering a better lifestyle for over 50s by providing verified information that will guide their decisions on where to travel safely in 2022, where to stay and what to experience”, Mrs Morgan said.

“This means we especially want to acknowledge the tremendous commitment that Rockhampton Regional Council and other finalists have demonstrated.

“We love that this App is on the mark for the requirements of the grey nomad market, with the audio element making it especially easy to enjoy”.

Winners in all 11 categories of the 2021 Grey Nomads Awards will be announced on Friday 4 March, 2022 during an online celebration.
