Ron Carter Named Top Volunteer

Sulphide Street Railway & Historical Museum stalwart Ron Carter has taken out the coveted Nydia Edes Award at last night’s annual Volunteer Awards.

Mr Carter received the top volunteering award in front of a big crowd gathered at the Civic Centre for high tea.

A former long-time employee of the Silverton Tramway Company, Mr Carter was later integral to the creation of the Sulphide St Railway Museum and was Chairman of the museum’s board for 28 years until 2009.

Mr Carter still volunteers at the museum at least two days a week, and continues to captivate museum visitors with his knowledge and enthusiasm.

Mayor Tom Kennedy congratulated Mr Carter on his big win, and also acknowledged all other award winners and volunteers across the city.

“Volunteering is the backbone of Broken Hill… Their work enhances the quality of life for everyone in Broken Hill,” said Mayor Kennedy.

“This year we received a really impressive number of entries across our various award categories, which highlights the many ways in which our volunteers have chosen to give back to Broken Hill and its people.

“The response to these awards shows just how lucky we are to have so many community-minded people in our city.”
