Safe Night Space Approved

Yesterday afternoon (Tuesday 2 March 2021) City of Perth Council endorsed Ruah Community Services to operate the City’s Safe Night Space for women in East Perth.

The Safe Night Space at 180 Hay Street, East Perth will provide a centre where women can rest, access basic facilities, seek support and connect to other services in a safe and secure environment.

“While the responsibility for the funding homelessness services is primarily the responsibility of the State Government and Commonwealth Governments, as is highlighted in the State Homelessness Strategy, the City of Perth realises people experience homelessness need support now and that is what we intend to deliver.” Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas concluded.

Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas said “Ruah Community Services have a long history of providing outstanding services to the community in Western Australia, and in particular for people experiencing homelessness. I look forward to working with them to deliver this much needed service.”

The City of Perth will now work with the State Government to seek funding for the operational costs of the facility.

Safe Night spaces are not a long-term solution, but an interim solution providing basic shelter and safety for women who are sleeping rough and therefore decrease the risk of further trauma.
