Safe snow season travels

Regional Roads Victoria is asking drivers heading to the Alpine regions this snow season to take extra care in challenging wintery conditions and to be prepared for extreme weather like black ice, blizzards and fog.

Regional Director (North East) Steve Bowmaker said drivers can play their part by ensuring their vehicles are properly equipped and in good condition.

“Check your tyre tread and pressure ahead of your journey, and test your lights and battery,” Mr Bowmaker said.

“Put anti-freeze in the radiator, pack sunglasses for snow glare and include an ice scraper for when you’re ready to leave the mountain.

“It’s best to fuel up before reaching the alpine regions so you’ve got enough for the entire journey. Motorists with diesel vehicles are advised to fill their tank with alpine diesel, or Winter Mix, which is available at service stations in towns including Omeo, Bright and Myrtleford.”

With coronavirus restrictions easing, many Victorians are visiting regional Victoria. It’s vital that motorists stay alert, be patient and plan ahead to ensure a safe journey.

“Conditions can change rapidly during the Winter months, sometimes requiring the closure of Alpine roads, so please visit traffic.vicroads.vic.gov.au to check for any issues on your planned routes,” Mr Bowmaker said.

“For safety’s sake, break up your journey at a roadside rest stop or at a town on the way to your destination.”

“Slow down in areas known for black ice. Signs will alert you to areas where it’s likely to be found, including near Ovens, Harrietville and Eurobin on the Great Alpine Road.”

All visitors to alpine resorts must carry snow chains and fit them when directed by authorities.

“Practice fitting chains before your trip and only fit chains to the driving wheels. Carry a torch, plastic garbage bag and gloves to make fitting easier,” Mr Bowmaker said.

“Those heading to Mount Hotham are reminded that diamond pattern snow chains are mandatory. In fact, diamond pattern snow chains are recommended for all alpine resorts.

“You’ll also see new advanced warning signs for roadside bays where you can safely fit chains.”

Mr Bowmaker said travellers should also familiarise themselves with new COVID-SAFE guidelines for the 2020 snow season by checking resort websites, as guest numbers will be limited.
