Safely dispose of household chemicals and batteries for free at the upcoming household chemical clean-out.

Wollongong’s next NSW EPA-supported Household Chemical Clean-out will be held at Fred Finch Park, Berkeley, on Sunday 13 September 2026.
Between 9am and 3.30pm, residents can drive-thru and safely dispose of chemicals and problem waste items including cleaning products, poisons, acids, batteries, pool chemicals, gas bottles, motor oils and fuels, and paint.

Lord Mayor of Wollongong Councillor Tania Brown said the free chemical clean-out was part of Council’s commitment to protecting our environment.
“We’re working to reduce emissions and create a greener future for Wollongong. That means reducing what we put in landfill and disposing of problem waste, such as household chemicals and batteries, responsibly,” said Cr Brown.
“These clean-outs help keep toxic chemicals from around the home out of the bin and out of landfill.
“Jump on to Council’s website to see what can and can’t be brought along. We only accept household quantities, not commercial, which means up to 20 litres or 20 kilograms.
“One of the big problem waste streams that residents can bring along are batteries of all types, which never belong in your household bin. If batteries are placed in your bin, they can become dangerous, are toxic and have the potential to start fires.
“For the cleanout, place all materials in the rear of your vehicle. When you arrive, remain in your car and the attendants will collect your items.”
Cr Brown explained that the cleanout event is in addition to the Community Recycling Centre (CRC) service at Wollongong Waste and Resource Recovery Park (Whytes Gully).
“The cleanout is your opportunity to bring along problem waste that isn’t accepted at the CRC, as well as some items that are, such as paint and oils,” she said.
“For those with cardboard, e-waste, polystyrene and scrap metal, our Community Recycling Centre is open every day of the year, except for Christmas Day.”
