Clarence Valley Council has secured $1,515,500 to widen Iluka Road as part of the Saving Lives on Country Roads Initiative.
The project will involve widening the existing shoulders and clear zones at critical locations along Iluka Road from Woombah to Iluka.
Clarence Valley Mayor Ian Tiley said the successful funding application supports Council’s decision to invest in a full-time Road Safety Officer – a co-funded position with Transport for NSW to prepare, implement and evaluate road safety projects for council.
“This is the first time Clarence Valley Council has employed a Road Safety Officer and we are now seeing the benefits of this role within Council,” Mayor Tiley said.
“Road Safety Officer Alana Brooks was instrumental in securing this funding and must be applauded for this achievement.
“This is a critical piece of infrastructure for Lower Clarence road users, and is in need of upgrades to improve usability and safety for all.
“There is no doubt the works carried out under this project will go towards improving facilities for the betterment of the community.”
The funding will be rolled out over two years, with $300,000 covering survey, design and preliminary works delivered in 2022/23 and $1,215,500 for the completion of construction works in 2023/24.
The works also comprise other safety measures including the provision of guideposts, safety barriers, advance curve warning signage, a rural gateway treatment (high to low-speed transition), enhanced line marking treatments and vehicle-activated-signs.
The Saving Lives on Country Roads Initiative is the regional arm of the NSW Government’s Safer Roads Program, with a total of $89 million allocated to fund 24 new projects and a number of ongoing projects in 2022/23.
Meanwhile the Liveable and Safe Urban Communities Initiative for metropolitan councils will deliver $37 million for 20 new projects.
This latest roll out was the fifth and final round of the Safer Roads Program, which will have delivered $822 million since it was introduced in 2018 to help reduce road trauma.
The Safer Roads Program forms an important pillar of the NSW Government’s road safety vision and is estimated to prevent around 1500 serious injuries and deaths on NSW roads over 15 years.
The latest announcement for Iluka Road follows Council committing $1 million to improve a section of Yamba Road that has experienced significant ongoing damage during recent flood events.
As a result, the single access route into each of the towns on either side of the Clarence Heads will undergo major improvement works.
