Bayside Council will write to the Planning Minister, the Hon Rob Stokes thanking him for his support for the Save Yarra Bay campaign and renewing interest in a cruise ship terminal at Garden Island.
“Bayside and Randwick ran a very strong campaign ‘No Cruise Ships in Botany Bay’ in late 2019,” said Mayor Joe Awada.
“It was very encouraging to read the Sydney Morning Herald article of Wednesday 24 March 2021, whereby New South Wales Planning Minister, the Hon Rob Stokes, voiced similar concerns for Yarra Bay and advocated Garden Island as the most logical place for a new terminal.
“It is good news that someone from the NSW Government is finally listening to what Council and residents have been saying all along,” Mayor Joe Awada said.
Bayside Mayor Joe Awada once again called on the NSW Government to cease all plans for a cruise ship terminal for Yarra Bay and adopt Garden Island as the better and more logical site.
“I cannot think of a better location to bring international tourists into Sydney than Garden Island, in the centre of our world-renowned harbour. I agree with Minister Stokes that a logical decision must be made.”
A cruise ship terminal in Yarra Bay would be an environmental disaster for established marine life and ecosystems that precariously balance amongst the industrial activities in and out of the Port.
It would bring further detrimental damage to our beaches and further calamity to the jammed road network around Port Botany.
