Scholarship program supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students

Applications are now open to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students across Victoria for the Transport Portfolio Aboriginal Scholarship Program.

Launched in 2021, the program provides financial and career support to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students in secondary school/VCAL, TAFE and university streams of study.

Twenty-one scholarships were awarded in 2021 to 19 secondary and two university students.

Students at TAFE/university can apply now until 4 March 2022.

Department of Transport’s Senior Adviser of Aboriginal Programs Kelly Lehmann said the scholarship program provides a pipeline of employment for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students into transport.

“We offer funding to those who apply to support them financially to finish their studies,” Kelly said.

“We’re committed to getting them to VPS5 roles, as well as offering them work experience, internships or graduate positions.”

A proud Bunurong woman, Kelly said the program will also open up a support network to participants, offering a valuable opportunity to create and maintain connections in the transport industry.

“Participants have the chance to interact with me and our other Aboriginal staff,” Kelly said.

“It’s really important for these students to see other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff in roles like this within the transport industry, whether it be cultural heritage managers or civil engineers or financial advisers.”

Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students at TAFE or university can apply for the scholarship program now.
