School grants for greater parent engagement

Supporting young learners at home, creating shared family spaces at school and welcoming migrant parents into school communities are key themes of the successful applications for 2021 Parent in Education grants.

A total of $83,000 will be shared between 26 schools and preschools to help parents play a greater role in boosting educational outcomes for their children.

Parent in Education grants help parents and caregivers to understand what their children are learning, how they can support their children’s education at home and to build positive relationships with their child’s school or preschool community.

Among this year’s recipients is Brompton Primary School, which will help parents design activities to support learning outside the classroom, focusing on real-life examples like how to include learning on a trip to the supermarket.

Other initiatives will emphasise cultural engagement, such as at Adelaide School of English, which will run workshops to help parents navigate essential services and school processes, and Pipalyatjara Anangu School, which will use geological studies to connect families and help children learn while compiling a family tree.

“We remain committed to improving learning outcomes for students through better parental engagement, as promised prior to the 2018 election,” said Education Minister John Gardner.

“This grant scheme gives parents and caregivers a better understanding of what and how their children are learning and how they can be supported at home.

“Stronger partnerships with schools help parents feel more empowered to support their children’s learning, which improves educational outcomes.

“The most significant educational impact is often achieved by effective parental engagement in learning at home, and it is great to so many school and preschools across the state coming up with innovative way to boost parent engagement in learning.”
