This week is Queensland Road Safety Week and together with Department of Transport and Main Roads, StreetSmarts, we’re committed to putting road safety first. In 2018, 245 people were killed on Queensland roads.
You might be wondering why we’re always told to wear a helmet. The fact is that the humble helmet plays a crucial role in keeping you safe.
A lot of science has gone into the construction of helmets.
The facts:
- When riding a bicycle or electric powered wheeled recreational device or a personal mobility device such as a rideable, you must wear an Australian Standard (AS) approved bicycle helmet.
- The helmet must be securely fitted and fastened.
- Passengers must also wear an approved helmet, securely fitted and fastened.
The exception:
- If you are a paying passenger on a three or four wheeled bicycle, you do not need to wear a helmet
- You do not need to wear a helmet if you have a doctor’s certificate stating that, for a specific amount of time, you cannot wear a helmet
- You are a member of a religious group and are wearing a headdress customarily worn by your group that makes it impractical to wear a helmet.
And if you choose not to:
- Motorcycle rider or passenger failing to wear approved helmet – three demerit points and $400
- Quad bike rider or driver and passenger of a utility off-road vehicle failing to wear a helmet – three demerit points and $400
- Bicycle rider or passenger fail to wear helmet – $133.
So why wouldn’t you wear a helmet?
