Search for man after South Yarra homicide

Homicide Squad detectives have today released CCTV footage of a man they are searching for following the fatal shooting of a man in South Yarra last month.

Emergency services were called to Fawkner Park on the night of 26 April after the body of a man was located.

It’s believed he was shot and killed some time around 7.40pm.

The victim was subsequently identified as 41-year-old Carnegie man Daniel O’Shea and police have today released an image of him.

It’s not specifically known why Daniel was in the park that night but investigators believe it was for a pre-arranged meeting.

Two firearms were located in the park the following day and following forensic examination, it’s believed those firearms are linked to the shooting.

Detectives have conducted an extensive canvas for CCTV footage throughout the area and have been able to obtain vision of a man they are looking to identify.

The man is wearing a black jumper and pants, along with a distinctive green baseball cap.

He is also carrying a white and red Coles plastic bag.

Police have been able to trace the man’s movements, starting on the western side of Fawkner Park where the deceased was located.

It’s then believed he travelled east to the top right corner of the park, down Toorak Road, then turned left on to Como Avenue.

He is last sighted shortly before Como Park and police believe it’s likely he has entered the park at this point.

Detectives have also released a map which shows the route the man has taken based on the CCTV footage.

Officer in charge of the Homicide Squad, Detective Inspector Andrew Stamper, said there is no doubt there are people in the community who can help solve this investigation.

“Someone out there knows exactly who this man is,” he said.

“They know who he is, why he was there, and what connection he has to our victim.

“What we need from those people is a name.

“I understand that there are people, especially those with connections in the criminal underworld, who feel they don’t want to get involved in these incidents.

“But regardless of the circumstances, someone has been murdered. We have a mother who has lost a son, people have lost a partner or a friend.

“It’s for those people – and the wider community that is no doubt feeling concerned about something like this happening – that we need to find who is responsible for Daniel’s death.

“I would also stress to anyone who does know who this is but has some concerns coming forward, it can be done via Crime Stoppers with absolute anonymity.

“All we need is a name and again, I’d urge anyone out there who can provide that detail to us to do so.”

Police are also keen to speak to anyone in the area of the shooting who may have CCTV or dashcam footage of the man and is yet to speak to police, to contact investigators.

They are especially keen to talk with anyone who may have vision around the Como Park area where the man was last sighted.

Anyone who witnessed the man, who was wearing a distinctive green cap, walking in the area on the night is also asked to come forward.

Anyone with any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
