Search underway for overdue fisherman, Coral Sea, off Hervey Bay

Hervey Bay Water Police are coordinating a sea and air search in the Coral Sea for an overdue fisherman.

The 37-year-old local departed from Urangan Boat Harbour around 1.30pm on Monday (May 25) for an overnight fishing trip, planning to return yesterday.

He failed to return home and police were alerted early this afternoon.

A search has commenced involving Water Police, Volunteer Marine Rescue, Queensland Boating and Fisheries, as well as the LifeFlight Helicopter based at Bundaberg.

Searches commenced on waters off Hervey Bay and continued into early this evening, expected to re-commence at first light tomorrow.

The man’s boat is a white 2002 Yalta 5.4 metre half cabin powerboat – registration #NE852Q (pictured).

The man is described as Caucasian, approximately 177cm tall, of a proportionate build, red crew cut hair with a beard and moustache.

Anyone who may have seen the boat, or the missing man is urged to contact police immediately.
