Second Teen Charged After Maidstone Gym Fire

Detectives from the Arson and Explosives Squad have charged a second teenage boy today as part of their investigation into a suspicious fire at a Maidstone gym last month.

The 17-year-old boy from the Hume area was arrested this morning and interviewed by police.

He has subsequently been charged with a range of arson offences and will face a children’s court this afternoon.

Earlier this week another 17-year-old boy from the Hume area was arrested and charged with arson, reckless conduct endangering life, possess anything with intent to destroy or damage property, handle stolen goods and theft.

The arrests follow a large fire at a gym on Hampstead Road in the early hours of 6 August.

A number of people were in the premises at the time of the fire, however luckily no one was physically injured.

The building sustained significant damage as a result of the fire.

Detectives will allege the arson was a targeted attack.
