Nillumbik is hosting a Seniors Social Lunch in June to acknowledge World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD).

According to the Survey of Older People in 2022 by the Australian Institute of Family Studies, 15% of people aged 65 and older living in community dwellings in Australia reported an experience of at least one of five subtypes of elder abuse in the 12 months preceding the survey.

In recognition of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, Seniors Rights Victoria will join us for lunch to raise awareness and increase knowledge for older people on the topic of Elder Abuse.

The lunch is also an opportunity to foster a sense of community among older people, and acknowledge the importance of maintaining social and community connections

Nillumbik Mayor Ben Ramcharan said “the Seniors Social Lunch is to highlight that Nillumbik is committed to creating a community where all residents are able to feel safe and supported to live their lives as they choose.”

“As people age, social connection is vital to maintaining a healthy sense of wellbeing. Gathering, sharing stories and seeing familiar faces, as well as meeting new ones, is instrumental in ageing well,” he said.

The Seniors Social Lunch will take place at the Eltham Community and Reception Centre, and will feature a guest speaker and musical entertainment.
