Police have arrested a man following an alleged serious assault in Maryborough last night (February 1).
At about 4pm police were called to a Colman Crescent address following reports a 52-year-old Maryborough man had been assaulted by a man armed with a baseball bat.
The 52-year-old was transported to Hervey Bay Hospital for treatment for a broken arm.
Police will allege that after the assault the man left in a vehicle taking a 49-year-old Maryborough woman, who had been at the address, with him.
The vehicle travelled southbound on the Bruce Highway to the Sunshine Coast before turning back and heading northbound on the highway.
With the assistance of Polair police attempted to intercept the car on the Bruce Highway at Palmview at around 6.40pm.
Police will allege the vehicle failed to stop and drove dangerously weaving in and out of traffic at roadworks before striking a concrete barrier, which resulted in the vehicle’s airbags being deployed.
The car then struck another northbound vehicle, pushing it sideways. The female driver of this vehicle was not injured.
The car came to a stop and the man ran from the scene and into nearby bushland where he was tracked by police dog and handler and arrested after being found hiding.
Following the arrest, the man suffered a medical episode with police providing first aid before the man was transported to Sunshine Coast University Hospital for treatment.
The Maryborough woman who was in his vehicle was not physically injured.
The 46-year-old Maryborough man was released from hospital and has been denied police bail and is due to appear in the Maroochydore Magistrates Court tomorrow charged with enter dwelling with intent to commit an indictable offence using actual violence whilst armed with a offensive instrument and damage property, assault occasioning bodily harm whilst armed with an offensive instrument, wilful damage, stealing, unlicensed driving while suspended and evade police.
Investigations are continuing.
All three people are known to each other.
