Services Australia Podcast: Coronavirus conversations – Scams

It is an unfortunate reality of modern life that wherever there is some form of government support for people in crisis, there seems to be someone else trying to illegally get their hands on some of it.

In this episode of the coronavirus conversations, Services Australia General Manager Hank Jongen talks with Justin Bott from the Financial Information Service about scams – what they can look like, and how we can protect ourselves from becoming a victim of a scam.

“I seem to get some form of scamming email or phone call every second day,” said Hank. “It’s all too easy to click on the wrong button, open the wrong email…suddenly you’re in trouble.

“It’s important to know there are services out there to help you if you fall victim to a scam.”

The podcast covers the importance of being up-to-date on the latest scams befalling our community, and reporting them to the right organisations if you’re ever taken in.

“I know it can be embarrassing to admit you’ve been scammed, but it’s so important to let Scamwatch know to help protect others from being taken advantage of,” said Hank.

“The Scamwatch page, at scamwatch.gov.au, is an interesting read and I encourage everyone to spend a few minutes becoming familiar with what common scams are happening in Australia right now.”
