Central Goldfields Shire is reviewing its Local Law and wants the community to provide input.
Council’s Local Law protects our public and private spaces and health and safety. It empowers Council to respond to local issues and protect public and private space as well as the community’s health and safety.
Under the Local Government Act we are required to review our Local Law every 10 years and this process is now underway.
It covers areas a range of diverse topics including:
- Roads and Public Places – signs, alcohol, parties, events, trading, rubbish containers, road works, building works, repairing vehicles, noise, toy vehicles, property numbers
- Environment – dangerous and unsightly property, burning outside, chimneys, heavy vehicles, camping and vans, rubbish and waste bins, storing machinery/goods/vehicles, shipping containers, charity collection bins
- Animals and Livestock – how many animals I can have, housing animals, fencing, wasps, excrement, horses on reservations, dogs in retail precincts, grazing, herding
Central Goldfields Shire Mayor Cr Liesbeth Long said Local Laws are there for the community to be able to enjoy our wonderful shire and surroundings. But it also keeps every one safe and able to deal with unwanted issues when they happen.
“The community has an opportunity to have a say in what they would like in our local laws for the next 10 years. Now is your chance to introduce new laws and amend or remove ones that are outdated or not relevant anymore.
“I encourage community members to take the time to read and familiarise yourself with our Local Laws available to view at www.engage.cgoldshire.vic.gov.au/local-law-review
“We have organised a number of in-person information sessions shire wide, where people can come along and chat to Council staff to learn more and to have their say. We’ve also got a dedicated webpage where community can find out more and complete an online survey.”
Community members are invited to help shape the updated Local Law and can get involved via the following ways up until 5pm, Friday 22 December:

- Wednesday 29 November, 11.30am to 1.30pm – Carisbrook Post Office
- Wednesday 29 November, 5 to 7pm – Goldfields Shopping Complex
- Thursday 30 November, 10am to 12noon – Goldfields Shopping Complex
- Thursday 30 November, 2 to 4pm – Maryborough Post Office
- Friday 1 December, 11am to 1pm – Talbot Post Office precinct
Early in 2024 community feedback will be reviewed and a draft Local Law developed.
There will be a further stage of community engagement for the Draft Local Law, with the final Local Law expected to go to Council for adoption mid-2024.
