Shellharbour City Council’s winning streak continues with the Shellharbour Civic Centre receiving a prestigious public architecture prize in the 2019 New South Wales Architecture Awards.

The winners were announced at a dinner hosted in Sydney by the NSW Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects on 5 July 2019.

The awards attracted 212 entries and featured 51 awards across 12 categories, including named awards, architecture awards and commendations.

Shellharbour Civic Centre won an award in the NSW Public Architecture category.

Cabarita Park Conservatory, the Green Square Library and Plaza, the Maitland Riverlink also won awards in this category.

Maitland Riverlink won the ‘Sulman Medal’ as the Public Architecture category winner and the NSW Architecture Medallion for the overall winner across all categories.

The Civic Centre will now progress to the National Architecture Awards to be announced on 7 November 2019.

Shellharbour Mayor Marianne Saliba said she was thrilled with the city’s most recent award.

“This is something the entire Shellharbour community can be proud of. Council long had a vision to create a city heart that would provide our community with a world-class, environmentally sustainable and welcoming public meeting place,” Cr Saliba said.

“The Civic Centre has become the beating heart of our city and this award is yet another excellent result for our community. It follows national awards and recognition for Shellharbour City Museum, Shellharbour City Library and the Dunmore Resource Recovery Centre,” Cr Saliba said.

In addition to the award-winning City Library and Museum, Shellharbour Civic Centre features a spacious and versatile auditorium, public meeting rooms, leafy Civic Square, spacious ‘Back Yard’, Council Chamber and administrative centre.

“Last week also saw the opening of the Civic Square Café, which had added yet another social dimension to this beautiful facility. It is already a hit with staff and the community,” Cr Saliba said.

The café is open 7 days a week and offers a full breakfast menu, lunch, coffee and catering.
