Mornington Peninsula Libraries’ supports a love of reading and lifelong learning by making dyslexic-friendly books even easier to find on the library shelves.
Just look for the blue stickers on the spines of books in the Junior Fiction section of your library to discover a new world of books designed specifically for those with dyslexia – a neurological condition that leads to difficulties with reading and spelling.
These books include special fonts that make text clearer to read and assist with letter confusion. Thicker, tinted paper with more accessible layouts aids with visual distress and can help readers focus on meaning, instead of sounding out each letter individually.
Our libraries free BorrowBox app also offers easy adaptions for easier comprehension, such as changing the font, text size and background colour of the eBooks.
Children can also follow along with their favourite storytellers on Story Box Library with both audio and visual cues that can help guide them through the stories.
These books and digital resources are just one small way that libraries can help people who find reading challenging or are reluctant readers to gain access to information in an easy-to-read format and find a new love for reading and storytelling.
While it’s estimated that 1 in 10 people are affected by dyslexia, many people don’t know how to find help, or where they can find resources on their own. That’s where libraries come in! Libraries are community centres where people can learn, create, connect with others, and discover new worlds through books.
