Shirley’s 20 volunteer years recognised – East Gippsland

Shirley Hill

Local volunteer, Shirley Hill has celebrated 20 years of providing visitors with tourism information at the Bairnsdale Visitor Information Centre (VIC).

Every Sunday for 20 years Shirley has been helping locals and visitors find interesting and fun things to do with their time from the Buchan Caves, the Raymond Island Koala Walk and so much more.

East Gippsland Shire Council Mayor Cr Natalie O’Connell presented Shirley with a certificate of appreciation for the amazing assistance she has provided to the community and visitors to the region on 5 July at the Bairnsdale VIC.

“This volunteering role involves working year-round, including weekends and public holidays, and council does recognise and acknowledge our dedicated volunteers like Shirley Hill,” Cr O’Connell said.

Shirley said she wouldn’t know it was a Sunday unless she was at the centre.

“The centre has certainly changed over the years; before 2011 when a kitchen was included in the building renovations we use to wash dishes in a bucket,” she said.

“We have so many more brochures and information from right around the state now, sell Forge Theatre tickets, local crafts and products. We see more students, young families and locals coming into the centre and travelling today.”

The greatest enjoyment for Shirley over her 20 years is the support of everyone and the companionship of others.
