Shoalhaven City Council Mayor, Amanda Findley and Member for Kiama, Gareth Ward MP, joined NSW RFS Assistant Commissioner Jason Heffernan, Shoalhaven RFS District Manager Superintendent, Mark Williams, and Shoalhaven Heads RFS Captain, Steve Thomson, to officially open the Shoalhaven Heads Rural Fire Station extension today.
The extension provides more modern amenities including expanded training facilities that will be used by surrounding brigades and communities as well as the Shoalhaven Heads Rural Fire Service (RFS) brigade.
Shoalhaven City Council Mayor, Amanda Findley said, “This extension will enable the local brigade to continue to grow its capability which is important for the Shoalhaven region.
“Our community deeply respects our emergency services – particularly our dedicated and hardworking Rural Fire Service volunteers. They have done an outstanding job keeping our community safe, especially during the fires last season.
“It is important that we continue to invest in our local RFS stations to support our incredible volunteers and the communities they protect. This is an increasingly popular area in the holiday season, this upgrade will help keep Shoalhaven Heads and surrounding communities safe into the future,” she said
“Last time I visited Shoalhaven Heads RFS was on 28 February when the old building had been gutted to make way for the new. It’s fantastic to see how quickly the project has come together and I am sure the brigade are very happy to be returned to their home base prior to this year’s fire season commencement,” said Clr Findley.
The extension includes new locker rooms, an extra substantial up-sized truck bay, a new kitchen, new bathrooms and an outdoor area for firefighters to relax after a fire or incident or for training events.
The extension has been funded by a $1 million NSW State Government Grant and works have been completed by local contractor Edwards Constructions using a high number of local sub-contractors.
