Show your support for future free from violence

The City of Whittlesea has partnered with Whittlesea Community Connections and DPV Health to present a number of community events in support of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence.

The United Nation’s 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence is an annual global campaign that runs from 25 November to 10 December.

Chair Administrator Lydia Wilson said the campaign is dedicated to addressing gender inequalities and ending gender-based violence.

“This issue is so very important in our community. We have the highest rate of family violence in the north east region and through this campaign we want to shine a spotlight on the underlying cause as we work to create a future where all people are safe, equal and respected,” Ms Wilson said.

“We know that gender inequality is a key driver of violence against women, and some of the priority actions Council is taking includes developing the leadership capacity of underrepresented women and advocating for increased access to specialist family violence services.”

To get involved in the 16 Days of Activism campaign and show your support for a future free from violence:

  • Join the walk against family violence

Take a walk around one of three trails across Epping-Lalor, Mernda and Thomastown between 25 November and 10 December and wear something orange to show your support of the campaign.

  • Take part in the youth art showcase

Young people aged 13 to 25 years can submit any piece of art interpreting the themes of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence and what it means to you. Entries close Monday 29 November and an online showcase of the artworks will be held on Wednesday 8 December.
